Super Sam had Baby Bird on his mind. He was sure that Baby Bird might be worried so he went to see her. Sam remembered when he left on his adventure across the sea and how his friend gave him a little star lamp to travel with. He made her a pretty heart pillow and on it he embroidered the words “Remember who you are, we love you.”
*This could easily be a great story to share near Michaelmas. It is a very appropriate dragon story for this age. Handwork for this week could be a heart pillow or felt bean bag.
At this point in the story I tell the fairy tale. If the fairy tales I have chosen don’t work for you then feel free to change them up.
On the next evening as Hobart and Baby Bird were building camp, they heard a wolf calling. Baby Bird was scared. Hobart told her not to worry, he vowed to protect her. That night Baby Bird told the story of Little Red Riding Hood. As the morning sun shed light on their space in the forest, Baby Bird noticed a wolf laying at the edge of their camp fire. She was frightenend, but Hobart stood to show his size and frighten the wolf. The wolf spoke, “please do not be afraid. I need some help. I know the gnomes help sick animals, can you help me?”
Baby Bird felt sad for being so unkind to the wolf. She apologized and moved near the wolf. “I am so sorry, I did not mean to be frightened of you. How can I help?”
The wolf lowered his head and Baby Bird could see a long quill stuck in his fur on his neck. “It looks like you might have gotten into trouble with a porcupine!” said Baby Bird. She carefully pinched the quill close to the skin and pulled it from the wolf’s neck. She took some healer’s salve from her medicine bag and applied it to the wound. “There! That should help.”
The wolf was very thankful. “Thank you so much. I want you to know that wolves never eat little girls or their grandmothers. You don’t need to be afraid. We do however eat pigs!” Baby Bird gave him a hug. She tidied the camp site and climbed on Hobart’s back for the day’s journey. Hobart continued to fly west.
Do you have a medicine bag? The real Baby Bird has a small bag with things that help her feel better, these include a roller ball of essential oils and some healer’s salve for bumps and bruises as well as a few bandaids.
